PDFs get large for several reasons that aren't always obvious. The biggest culprits are embedded high-resolution images — when you export a Word document with photos at 300 DPI print quality, every image bloats the PDF. A single A4 document with five full-page images can easily reach 50MB.

Embedded fonts are the second major contributor. PDFs embed font data so the document renders identically everywhere. A document using three custom fonts might add 2–4MB just for the font data, regardless of how much text is on the page.

Scanned documents are a special case. When you photograph or scan a paper document, the PDF is essentially a container for a series of large images. A 10-page scanned contract can be 30–40MB because each page is stored as a 300 DPI raster image. Digital PDFs (created in Word, Google Docs, or Adobe) are far more compact because they store text as vector data rather than images.

Understanding your use case determines how aggressively you should compress. For a job application portal (most accept 500KB–2MB), compress the PDF but keep readability high — recruiters need to read your CV clearly. For an email attachment (Gmail's 25MB limit), moderate compression is usually sufficient. For legal filings where courts require specific file sizes, use the target size feature to hit the exact limit.

One important caution: compressing a PDF with digital signatures will invalidate those signatures, since the file contents change. Always compress before signing, never after.
