iPhones (since iOS 11) save photos in HEIC format by default. While HEIC offers better compression than JPEG, Windows PCs, many Android phones, and most websites don't support it. Here's how to convert HEIC to JPG — free, no software needed.
What is HEIC?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since 2017. It produces smaller files than JPEG at the same quality — but compatibility is limited outside Apple devices.
Convert HEIC to JPG Online (Free)
- 1. Go to FileCurve's HEIC to JPG Converter
- 2. Upload your .heic file (or multiple files at once)
- 3. Wait for conversion (usually under 5 seconds per photo)
- 4. Download your JPG files — same quality, widely compatible
Convert HEIC on iPhone Itself
To stop your iPhone from shooting in HEIC: go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select Most Compatible. This saves photos as JPEG instead of HEIC going forward.
On Windows
Windows 10/11 doesn't natively open HEIC files. You can install the HEIC Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store ($0.99), or use FileCurve's free converter to batch convert all your iPhone photos.
HEIC vs JPG — Which is Better?
- HEIC: 40% smaller files, better color depth, supports transparency — but poor compatibility
- JPG: Slightly larger files, universally supported on every device and platform
For sharing or uploading to websites, convert to JPG. For storage on Apple devices, keep as HEIC.
